About us

Who we are

Kenneth Donnell, a native Nantucketer, upon his death generously left his personal assets in a Trust to support Nantucket’s youth. The Trust states that the interest earned on his investments is to be distributed out to applicants between the ages of 5-17 “ to participate in extracurricular activities that they may not otherwise be able to afford”. Applications are accepted twice per year, once in the Spring and once in the Fall. Decisions are based on need which means that not every applicant may receive a grant. The number of past grants received by an applicant is also considered.

Other criteria considered:

  • Grants aren’t awarded to Nantucket children attending a school off island
  • Each application is considered separately, even in the case of multiple siblings
  • Decisions are based on greatest financial need
  • New applicants typically receive priority over applicants who have received previous grant(s)

“I am a single mother who has lived on island for the past 20 years. My daughter had a passion for figure skating which is a very expensive sport. With the help of the Donnell Trust she was able to participate in the skating program from 5th grade through high school. I am very grateful for the support they gave us.”

“My husband and I have four children. Raising a family on Nantucket is expensive even before any extracurricular activities. The Donnell Trust has been able to assist us in paying for summer camp at the Community School and music lessons during the school years which is helpful and brings our children so much joy.”

“My son is autistic and requires a one-on-one assistant to participate in group activities. Often the cost of the assistant is more than the program. The Donnell Trust was able to pay for the entire summer program for us which allowed us to be able to afford the aid he needs.”
